One night, we had a map spread out on the floor of my living
room and were making scientific-sounding proposals. Logical reasons for why to
be where.
Portland, too Portland.
Oregon, that is.
Also Maine.
Colorado too much, too perfect, too already-been for X.
California, northern – almost the same for me.
Over and again: Ithaca.
Criteria include, but are not limited to the following
descriptors:
Mountains
Water
College nearby
Good nature
Somewhere new to both of us
Small city
Cultural opportunities
From somewhere in my head pops up a comic of Dilbert pacing
about the frames and describing his ideal girlfriend. Dogbert is dutifully
scribbling down items on the top sheet of a huge stack of pages, as Dilbert
holds forth: “And she should be a ballerina….”
