w&od
when i start i know
it will be dark before i'm finished
but the thickness still surprises
the white dashes stretching into nothing
no sense of rise or fall
water running alongside
breeze of soccer field grass
windows lit in distant trees
porch dog watches yard deer
and i watch, push, stretch
batteries warn, then fail
know better: the sun fades so softly
settles into wetlands
onto trailside benches
turning off time
leaving only space
the air to make it home
