22 may

It was with no small grin that he approached
my desk
                nearly ready to rock
                                                                back
                                                                                forth
                                                on his heels
                                                                                toes
“While you were gone—“
                                                                he began,
dashing a glance to my windowsill garden,

                “I thought you should know,”

and here I wondered
                as he paused
so I guessed—
                                                way, way off—

“I watered my plant myself.”
                He nodded, confirming.

I repeated, to confirm.
                                Agreed.
                Beaming.

“I’m proud of you,”
                                I offered, proud.
He accepted, proud

“That’s all I wanted,” he said.

                Water me, we say.

from the drop-down menu
it’s a can-do
(if you pull through)
(pearl three)
(purl what?)

When the pen lends its tongue
Unstrung from its tale
Told twice or more unfolded
Hand holding and sideways glancing
These are the angles and the dishes
The a la cartes full of wishes
Imagining the pages twinkling blank
Winking back with impish yes
Invitations will not arrive
Start: write, do, thrive

17 may

Eleven twenty and forty seconds and near sleep
I realize
my clock still says 16 THU and
NO DANCING

Only the time works
Change the day and date yourself
if you need to
Get down all bad with yourself
if you need to

By eleven twenty-two
it’s 17 FRI
Still NO DANCING

Get down if you need to
You don’t need a clock to tell you it’s time

Life as
makework--?
Say you fake work,
if you shirk work
soon they’ll take work
from your plate—jerk!
Now it’s slow lurch
down the path, dirt
and the slow hurt
‘til it’s way worse
and a dark hearse
pulls alongside,
offers you a ride
