after the avocado

I knew I would not

park in the same spot

day after day

could not continue

building routine

in place of picnics

steal my space tomorrow

hide it before I seek

(toss keys in air,

catch, fall)

let me pencil in

to check my calendar

the date’s still open

but the time is slipping by

the rosebuds—while ye may—

still a-flyin’, and all that

I’ve got to catch the next

before the last—

the shimmering arc of time

      twists, unfixed—

a rainbow trout unhinged

     uncaught, gleams, gone

     flash—

chased erased vanished—

time only floats away

forgotten like a password

the last word you thought you’d lose

fused to a memory so precious

a slick fish slipping the net

getting away without notice

hocus pocus and the backdrop’s changed

rearranged like a carnival game unpacked again

step right up and try your luck

log in and line drive those characters

straight on through toward hope

before it’s called for the response

released tongues its way

through cells brained apart

heartless without air

mindless without matter

gone beyond recall

gaping hapless vacancy

barn door mouth slams shut

26 april

accidentally punctuated

incorrectly

the breath mis-taken

too early

                no one knew

whether to gasp or cry

out of breath or fear

some reprisal in denial

of forthcoming storm

clouds ahead

                                these are the days

let us take our time and others

will wait for delivery

confirmation

                                package for tomorrow

crashing down on clouds and out

pockets of blue sky and else

reluctant to conclude

hesitant to acknowledge the forecast

outlasting its usefulness

turning into present

another question

regards the ending-up

inbetween

not exactly going without

certainly not going with

not having not

but not overly having

not lonely, but only

better treasure to measure

to have what is not to hold,

or to grow more than old?
